Forms follow function as words that simplified all the concept of design, which means it creates a meaning for a new object. Something same meaning as less is more. This words mostly appears from the writing, the speak or the concept from American architects. Louis Henry Sullivan, use this way to express in new material and new building type of particular form.
As my thought, form follow function is a very simple question with an answer inside. A decision, that makes form follow function looks complicated but simple. If a person who asking the question without having an answer, it is possible? No. It doesn’t make sense at all. Every single little thing comes with its own meaning. Once a question appears, there will have an answer to solve it. Even though, a decision wants to make a space , a decision that make absence of ornament are all driven by function. Thus, form follow function has become a part of the initial thinking of the concept in designer’s daily speaking. It is a easy way to start a design but it also limited your thought.
As my way of thought, form follow function is like a trap cage that keep your idea away from expanding your thought. You may try to break the connection when the concept creates another principles in the designing process. It may confuse and make you struggling all the time. At the same time, I could cause you losing your own personal philosophy of design development. This is the part that I experience through.
Besides, form follow function would be interpreted in two ways, as a description or as a prescription. It advocates simplicity over complexity that results from purity of function. As a prescription of design, form follow function advocates considering functionality above all design consideration, including usability, economics and aesthetics. Hence, form follow function creates a sense of mechanism which provides an object to maximise Its functionality without any aesthetics form. The functionality would be the priority of the whole design. It might bring a lot of convenience for people. As my opinion, form follow function become a restrictive rules. If we take it as a guide, that would be another success criteria of creative functionality design. Treat it as primary consideration for determine a building. If not, the end up will be a mass production of design building.
